Driving a Rental Car to the Hills of Portalon
For those who would like to explore the country on the way to the Pacific Coast, you can rent a car at the airport in San Jose. Although it is not necessary, we highly recommend renting a 4 wheel drive vehicle. This will allow you to access more interesting places in the country, especially the mountainous regions in Costa Rica’s Southern Zone.
We will also recommend using a navigation app on your cell phone like Google Maps or Waze to help you get around. Type in the names of towns, popular tourist locations, established local businesses, hospitals, or airports, and you will get a good sense of where to go. Keep in mind that there are tolls from San Jose to the coast so make sure you have some local currency (colones) or small US bills for your trip.
